아주 작은 공간도, 한정된 예산이라도, 어떤 생각과 목표를 가지면 안 될 건 없다. 우리는 그 안에서 최고의 성과를 만들기 위해 노력하고 결과물을 만들 테니까. 도시의 크고 작은 상점들은 저마다 개성을 가지고 고객들의 니즈를 살피며 문을 열어둔다. 이 프로젝트는 하나의 도심 속 오아시스 같은 존재이길 바랬다. 많고 많은 매장들 사이 아주 작은 공간이지만 존재감을 드러내고, 오로지 나무라는 자연 소재 한 가지 만으로 내 외부 전체를 감싸 시공 프로세스를 줄이고 공정을 단순화 시켰다. 이 매장은 도심 속 원두막과 같은 휴식을 줄 수 있고, 누구나 편하게 들어올 수 있는 “장소”로서 기능하길 바랬다. 판매원이 없는 무인 매장이라 접근성이 쉽고 고객에게 활짝 열어두고 언제든 걷다가 무심코 앉아서 쉴 수 있는 나무 벤치를 만들고, 동일 소재로 루버를 만들어 빛의 세기를 조절하고, 루버를 통해 갈라진 빛은 그림자를 만들어 앉은 이에게 시원한 나무 그늘이 되어 주길 바랬다. 상부 처마의 금속 받침은 커튼월에서나 쓰는 스파이더 유리 힌지를 사용하고, 나무와 나무가 만나는 모든 이음부는 나무가 숨 쉴 수 있는 바람길(숨은매지)을 만들어 비가 오고 물을 먹고 습기가 생겨도 바람이 지나다니는 틈을 통해 재료의 생명력을 길게 가져가길 기대했다.
누구에게든 열려있고, 편하게 매장을 이용하길 바라는 마음을 담아 한 땀 한 땀 바느질하듯 각재를 붙여나갔다.
세상에 존재하는 이유 있는 어떤 것들에 대하여.
Even the smallest space, even with a limited budget, can achieve anything if guided by clear intentions and goals. Within such constraints, we strive to produce the best possible outcome and create a meaningful result. Just as shops of all sizes in the city open their doors with unique identities while responding to customers’ needs, this project aimed to become an oasis within the urban fabric. Though a very small space among countless other stores, it asserts its presence and is entirely enveloped—inside and out—by a single natural material: wood. This choice simplified the construction process and streamlined the workflow. The store was envisioned as a restful, open “place” in the city—a small urban pavilion where anyone can comfortably enter. Being an unmanned store enhances accessibility, allowing visitors to casually walk in, sit, and rest on wooden benches designed for this purpose. Louvers made of the same material regulate the intensity of light, and the slatted shadows cast through them create a cool, shaded spot for those seated below. The metal supports for the upper eaves utilize spider glass hinges typically seen in curtain walls, while every joint where wood meets wood includes hidden ventilation channels, allowing the material to “breathe.” Rainwater, moisture, and humidity can pass through these gaps, extending the lifespan and vitality of the wood.
With a desire for the space to be open and welcoming to everyone, each wooden element was meticulously attached, almost like stitching, reflecting care and intention.
A reflection on the existence of things in this world that have a reason to be.
