결핍으로부터의 가능성
일반 근린생활시설의 내부 인테리어는 어떤 미감과 주제를 찾는데 의식하지 않을 수 없다. 처음 마주한 현장은 천장고가 매우 낮은(약2.2m) 약 50평 정도의 공간을 가지고 있었다. 역시나 주변으로 보이는 환경적 특이점은 그리 고려될 것이 없는, 내부 공간의 집중된 완성도가 관건이라는 판단이 우선하였다.
‘피부과의원’이라는 프로그램은 대개 쾌적하고 깨끗한 분위기, 높은 천장고를 요구하게 마련이며, 클라이언트의 요구도 크게 다르지 않았다. 물리적으로 바꿀 수 없는 매우 낮은 천장고를 바라보며, 여기서는 일반적인 접근은 불가능하다는 판단을 우선하였다.
건축에서 결핍이나 단점은 해결해야 할 과제이자, 때로는 전혀 새로운 가능성으로 안내한다. 우리는 이곳만이 가지고 있는(낮고 좁은 공간) 고유한 감각이 되어야겠다고 판단했다.
건축 혹은 인테리어의 시작은 늘 다양한 주제가 시발점이 될 수 있다. 그 시작은 주변 환경의 물리적 조건, 혹은 향과 조망, 프로그램이 될 수도 있고, 어릴 적 기억, 사소한 물건, 작은 창문 하나의 뷰가 될 수도 있다. 더 나아가 어떤 단어 혹은 문장 하나가 될 수도 있고, 그림하나, 연필하나, 물컵 하나가 될 수도 있다. 그만큼 시작의 영감은 다양한 것으로부터 온다.
이 좁고 낮은 공간에서의 시작은 작은원형테이블에서 시작된다.

Possibility Born from Deficiency
It is difficult not to be conscious of seeking a certain aesthetic or theme when designing the interior of a typical neighborhood commercial space. The site we first encountered had a rather low ceiling (about 2.2 m) and a floor area of roughly 50 pyeong (≈165 m²). There were no remarkable environmental features in the surroundings to consider, so our primary judgment was that the interior’s concentrated completeness would be key.
A dermatology clinic, as a program, usually demands a comfortable and clean atmosphere and high ceilings, and the client’s expectations were no different. Facing the very low ceiling—a condition physically impossible to change—we concluded that a conventional approach would not work here.
In architecture, deficiencies or limitations are not only challenges to overcome but can also guide us toward entirely new possibilities. We decided that the unique sense of this space should come precisely from its low and narrow characteristics. The beginning of architecture or interior design can always stem from a wide range of inspirations. It might start from the physical conditions of the surrounding environment, a scent, a view, or the program itself. It could come from a childhood memory, a trivial object, or the view through a small window. Beyond that, it could even arise from a single word or sentence, a painting, a pencil, or a cup of water. Inspirations can come from anywhere.
In this narrow, low-ceilinged space, the starting point begins with a small round table.
필요한 만큼 자리를 내어주는 일
테이블을 중심으로 로비가 구성되고, 테이블 크기에 맞춰 좌석과 벽체는 곡선으로 물러선다, 스피커와 벽장도 있어야 할 자리에 맞춰 벽이 파내어져 맞물렸다. 인포메이션 데스크는 그 자리에 있던 라운드벽의 일부가 파내어져 자연스럽게 자리를 만들고, 매입 조명은 벽과 천장에서 돌출되지 않고, 원하는 위치에 순전히 파내어져 위치할 뿐이다.
우리는 조직된 평면을 기능으로 채우고 각각을 부연하지 않으며, 파내어져 원래 있었던 것처럼 표현했다. 기능은 실체를 구체화하는 과정에서 물리적인 돌출을 사라지게 만들고, 예정된 표층의 감각적 구축이 의도적으로 감추어진 건축의 언어다. 그 내부 공간은 푸른빛의 물결처럼, 대상은 뿌옇게 흐트러지고, 기능과 물성은 그 자리에 그저 있을 뿐이다.
이렇듯 새로운 감각의 시작은, 작은 빈티지 테이블 하나에서도 온다.
Giving Space Where It’s Needed
The lobby is organized around the table, and in response to its size, the seating and walls recede in gentle curves. Where speakers and cabinets need to be, the walls are carved out to accommodate them seamlessly. The information desk naturally emerges from a section of the existing curved wall that has been hollowed out, and the recessed lighting is embedded precisely where desired, without protruding from the walls or ceiling.
We fill the organized plan with functions without over-explaining them, carving them out so that they appear as if they were always there. In the process of materializing function, physical projections disappear, and the sensory construction of the intended surfaces becomes a deliberately concealed language of architecture. The interior space flows like a ripple of blue light, objects blur softly, and function and material simply exist in their place.
In this way, the beginning of a new sensibility can come from even a single small vintage table.

그랬던 것처럼
요구된 프로그램을 평면에 펼치고, 각 실들은 조건에 맞춰 개수를 만들어냈지만, 병원의 가장 중요한 얼굴인 로비 공간이 원하는 크기로 나오지 않았다. 고심이 깊어지던 어느 날, 불현듯 머릿속에 알바 알토의 작은 오리지널 빈티지 원형 테이블이 스쳐 지나갔다. ‘낮고 작은 공간을 억지로 크게 보이게 의도치 말고, 작은 가정집 테이블 하나를 오브제틱하게 놓자.‘ 소규모 피부과 특성상 많은 사람들이 대기실에서 기다리는 형태가 아닌, 사전 예약제로 각자가 본인 시간에 맞춰 오지 않을까? 굳이 로비가 클 이유가 없겠다는 생각이 들었다. 그 생각이 머리를 관통하는 순간, 모든 것은 일사천리로 계획의 방향성을 일관성 있게 잡아나가게 된다. 모든 것이 그랬던 것처럼.
As it Had been
The required program was laid out on the plan, and each room was created in the necessary number according to its conditions, but the lobby—the most important face of the clinic—did not achieve the desired scale. One day, while deeply pondering this, a small original vintage round table by Alvar Aalto suddenly crossed my mind. “Instead of forcing this low, small space to appear larger, let’s place a simple household table as an object.” Considering the nature of a small dermatology clinic, most patients would not be waiting in the lobby but would come according to their scheduled appointments. There was no real reason for the lobby to be large. The moment this idea struck, everything began to fall into place, and the direction of the plan became clear and consistent. Just like that, as it had always been.
