Prologue
타이중은 대만에서 두 번째로 큰 도시로, 산업과 문화, 관광이 균형 있게 발달한 곳이다. 연중 평균 기온이 23℃ 정도인 아름다운 이곳에는 샤넬의 수석 디자이너 칼 라거펠트가 생애 후반기에 직접 디자인 협업한 하이엔드 주거 프로젝트가 자리하고 있다. 이 주거공간의 주인이자 클라이언트인 Dr. Ben은, 이 집의 인테리어를 의뢰하기 위해 먼 한국땅의 우리를 찾았다. Dr. Luke 원장님의 소개로 만남이 이뤄졌지만. 선뜻, 이 일을 할 수 있을까 걱정부터 되었다. 언어도 다르고, 생활과 주거문화, 기후까지 다른 환경 속에서 이 프로젝트를 온전히 완성할 수 있을지 걱정이 뒤 따랐기 때문이다.
하지만 우려와 달리 클라이언트는 우리를 깊이 신뢰해 주었고, 덕분에 차분히 설계에 집중할 수 있었다. 그렇게 오랜 시간 공들여 설계하고, 긴 시공 과정을 거친 프로젝트의 완성된 모습을 드디어 마주하게 되었다. (대만의 신축 아파트는 대부분 골조만 제공되는 ‘마이너스 옵션’ 형태로, 입주자가 대부분의 설비와 인테리어를 새롭게 구성한다. 인테리어 공사에만 8개월 이상의 긴 시간이 소요되었다.) 촬영과 최종 리뷰를 위해 타이중을 방문한 기행문과 사진으로 이번 프로젝트의 긴 여정을 마무리 하려 한다.
In Taichung, the second-largest city in Taiwan—where industry, culture, and tourism coexist in balanced harmony—stands a high-end residential project personally designed in collaboration by Karl Lagerfeld, the late creative director of Chanel, during the later years of his life. The owner of this residence and our client, Dr. Ben, reached out to us all the way from Taiwan to commission the interior design of his home. Although the introduction came through Dr. Luke, our first reaction was concern rather than confidence. We wondered whether we could truly complete this project within an environment shaped by a different language, lifestyle, housing culture, and climate from our own.
However, contrary to our initial concerns, the client placed deep trust in us, allowing the project to move forward with calm and steady focus. After a long process of design and construction, we were finally able to stand before the completed space.
(In Taiwan, most newly built apartments are delivered in a so-called “minus-option” condition, where only the structural frame is provided, requiring residents to newly configure almost all facilities and interior finishes themselves. As a result, interior construction alone typically takes more than eight months.)
3차원 곡률을 만들기 위한 목구조 천장틀의 뼈대가 아름답게 느껴졌다. 외국인 클라이언트와 시공사를 상대로 메신저로 현장 사진을 주고받으며 긴밀히 소통 했지만 설계한 의도를 도면과 이미지로 얼마나 잘 전달할 수 있을지 걱정이 많았다. 하지만 현장에서 전해오는 사진들의 면면을 보면서 우리의 우려는 기우였음이 틀림없다고 생각했다. 우리의 생각과 작업을 있는 그대로 존중하고, 도면대로 구현하려는 노력이 여기 먼 한국까지 고스란히 느껴졌기 때문이다.
The structural wooden framework of the ceiling, created to realize the three-dimensional curvature, felt deeply beautiful. Although we maintained close communication with the foreign client and construction team through messenger apps, constantly exchanging site photographs, we carried many concerns about how accurately the design intentions could truly be conveyed through drawings and images alone.
However, as the photographs from the site continued to arrive, we became convinced that our worries had been unnecessary. The respect they showed toward our ideas and work, along with their sincere effort to faithfully realize the design as drawn, could be felt all the way here in Korea.
완성된 집의 리뷰를 위해 우리를 초대한 Ben은 꼭집어 이 프로젝트의 평면 스케치를 꼭 갖고 싶다고 했다. 손으로 그린 도면을 표구사에 가서 액자에 담아 조심스럽게 기내에 들고 탔다. 작은 선물이지만, 그 안에 담은 나의 애정을 온전히 전할 수 있어 기뻤다. 촬영이 계속되고 짧은 일정 사이 타이중 도심을 걸었다. 특별한 목적 없이 걷던 시간 속에서, 이곳의 온도와 리듬이 더 선명하게 다가왔다. 익숙하지 않은 언어, 그러나 크게 불편하지 않은 거리의 질서, 그리고 그 사이를 채우는 사람들의 속도. 그 모든 것이 국가와 사람, 공간에 대한 감각을 조금씩 확장시켰다.
프로젝트를 마무리하며 돌아보면, 결국 남는 것은 완성된 결과물보다 그 과정에서 마주한 여러 장면들이다. 클라이언트와 늦은 시간까지 이어졌던 카톡 메시지, 번역기를 수도없이 달고 살았던 수개월, 설계 과정에서의 시행착오, 예상과는 달랐던 문화적 차이, 그리고 그것을 받아들이며 조금씩 수정해 나갔던 판단들. 역시나 설계는 바로 그 불완전함 속에서 다음을 생각하게 만든다.
타이중에서의 시간은 (또 타이중 프로젝트를 했던 아름다운 시간도) 그렇게 지나갔다. 따뜻하게 환대해 주었던 Dr. Ben 클라이언트 내외분, 그리고 설계에 대한 깊은 존중과 배려. 공간은 이제 우리 손을 떠나 다른이의 시간 속으로 들어간다. 나는 다시 또 다른 도면 앞으로 돌아가겠지만, 이곳에서의 빛과 공기, 그리고 잠시 머물렀던 감각들은 오래 남을 것 같다.
그리고 마지막날 벤이 선물로 준 노란색 나이키 트레비 스캇 까지도.
Ben, who invited us to review the completed home, told us that he especially wanted to keep the floor plan sketches from this project. We framed the hand-drawn drawings before departure and carefully carried them onto the plane ourselves. It was only a small gift, but we were happy that it could fully convey the affection and sincerity embedded in the process.
Between our short schedule, we walked through downtown Taichung. In those moments of wandering without any particular destination, the atmosphere and rhythm of the city became more vivid to us. The unfamiliar language, yet surprisingly comfortable order of the streets, and the pace of the people moving through them — all of these gradually expanded our sensibilities toward the country, its people, and its spaces.
Looking back after completing the project, what ultimately remains are not only the finished results, but the many scenes encountered throughout the process. The late-night KakaoTalk messages exchanged with the client, the countless months spent constantly relying on translation apps, the trial and error during the design process, the cultural differences that unfolded differently from what we had expected, and the gradual adjustments we made while learning to accept them. Once again, architecture reveals itself through precisely these imperfections, continuously leading us toward what comes next.
And so, our time in Taichung — along with the beautiful memories shaped through this project — quietly passed by. To Dr. Ben and his wife, who welcomed us with such warmth, and for the deep respect and consideration they showed toward my design, I remain sincerely grateful.
The space now leaves my hands and enters into someone else’s time and life. I will soon return to another drawing, another project, yet the light, air, and fleeting sensations of this place will likely remain with me for a long time.
And even the yellow Nike Travis Scott sneakers Ben gifted me on the very last day.
